What is a Skin Biopsy?
When it comes to moles, birthmarks, and skin irregularities, it’s often hard to tell what is harmful and what is completely benign with just our eyes. A skin biopsy is a diagnostic treatment that allows Dr. Amy B. Lewis and her staff to identify, diagnose, and treat your skin irregularities safely and efficiently. A skin biopsy is typically done as the first part of our mole removal process (LINK) and involves punching or scraping of the affected area for a sample of skin. That skin is then sent to a lab to be tested for irregularity, after which the next steps for treatment are assessed.
How Much does a Skin Biopsy Cost?
The price of your skin biopsy will vary depending on the size of your biopsy area and your current health insurance plan. To get a better idea of how much your skin biopsy will cost, come in for a private consultation with Dr. Amy B. Lewis and her staff.
What Can I Expect During my Skin Biopsy?
Before your skin biopsy begins, Dr. Lewis will apply a numbing agent to the treated area. This is to ensure you remain as comfortable as possible throughout your treatment. Once numb, Dr. Lewis will gently and carefully scrape of punch the area of skin that needs to be tested. This sample will be sent to a lab to determine if the skin cells have harmful abnormalities. If the skin biopsy comes back irregular or malignant, Dr. Lewis and her team will discuss your potential treatment options with you.
